Ultimate Bonfire Night Safety Guide.

Well even though we have a few weeks to go I've already heard the first fireworks pop, crackle and screech across the night sky. So in the interest of safety and fun we give you our thoughts on having a safe Bonfire night.

Tips for business.

  •  Be vigilant over Halloween and Bonfire night as children are more tempted to start fires, now is a good time to assess fire plans and training.
  •  Keep combustible material to a minimum, make sure no cardboard or wooden pallets are stacked up outside, store them in a safe and secure place.
  •  Carry out a fire drill and assess how well the evacuation went and put any lessons learned to good use.
  • Make sure that a fire safety risk assessment has been completed by a competent person and that this assessment is up-to-date.

Bonfire and Fireworks Safety Tips

If you're having a bonfire please follow these simple tips

  •  Warn your neighbours so they can make any preparations
  •  Build your fire away from sheds, fences and trees.
  •  Check there are no telephone wires or cables above the bonfire
  •  Don't leave the Bonfire unattended, things can get out of control quickly.
  •  Don't use paraffin or petrol to start the fire.
  • Before lighting check the base of the Bonfire for hedgehogs.
  • Keep children a safe distance from the fire and pets inside.
  • Only buy fireworks marked BS7114 and follow the instructions.
  •  Follow all points on the Fireworks Code.
  • Don't burn aerosols, tyres, canisters or anything containing foam or paint – these items can give off toxic fumes or explode and would really spoil the fun.
  • Don't throw fireworks into the Bonfire.
  • Keep a full bucket of water or a connected hose pipe nearby – just in case of emergencies.
  • Once the Bonfire has died down, spray the embers with water to stop it reigniting.

There are lots of safety points to take into account if having a Bonfire at home, so consider going to an arranged event locally instead. Which ever you choose please stay safe, wrap up warm and most importantly have fun.
